I guess what some would call “the inevitable” has happened. We’ve had one of our project iPads stolen. This has created some interesting emailing and discussing to determine the proper steps to follow such a case. As we know many folks are reading this blog to watch the implementation of our pilot with teachers, we thought it would be of use to describe some of the lessons we’ve learned.
With our project, each participant has been given a number of technology items over the past three years. At the beginning of each project year the participants sign off on a policy of ownership sheet from the IU which stipulates that the equipment now belongs to their school district. The equipment is to remain in their possession so long as they are employed with the district. This transfer of ownership from our IU to the districts means that in the case of theft, the teacher has had to contact the district to determine how to proceed. We also provide our districts with a list of items purchased for their assets accounting.
In the particular case in question, the school district does carry theft protection insurance on technologies, however the deductible is higher than the cost to replace the iPad. Therefore the teacher and the district have agreed to use some site-based monies to replace the stolen iPad. A reasonable outcome for our participant, I think.
We’ve reminded our educators the importance of documenting serial numbers and completing warranty info to support proper helps and fixes when trouble occurs. We’ve also reminded folks that the iPad is a very desirable item – the above theft occurred on a local college campus in a high traffic area which, unfortunately, did not have security cameras operating to track the theft. When I was on a college campus just last week, allowing students to utilize my iPad during a presentation, you can be sure I kept my eyes on all of the equipment I’d brought with me the entire time!
